Americans pronounce New Hampshire in the correct ("shur") way. Not sure why they would pronounce English counties differently.

C F C There's Leicestershire, Oxfordshire, Rutland and Warwickshire, Northamptonshire is next door, D G7 Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire, Norfolk and Lincolnshire, Huntingdonshire and there's more, like C F C Suffolk and Essex and Surrey and Sussex and Nottinghamshire in the centre, D G7 C Devon and Cornwall and Dorset and Somerset, Kent and what comes after Kent? Hmmm... F C Westmorland, Cumberland, also Northumberland and county Durham below, there's D G Gsus4 G7 Lancashire, Gloucestershire, Derbyshire, Cheshire, 11 more counties to go! C F C Shropshire and Staffordshire, Berkshire and Hampshire and Herefordshire next to Wales, there's D G7 Hertfordshire, Middlesex, Worcestershire, Wiltshire and Yorkshire with all of the dales, and C C7 F D Buckinghamshire's the end of the list, there's no need to sing anymore, 'cause we're G7 C F C not doing Scotland or Wales or new ones invented in 1974.

Rutland likes to claim it's the smallest county in England, and this was true at the time of Domesday Book. However City of London later took that title, and CoL remains the smallest county in England to this day. In terms of modern ceremonial counties, the de facto geographical counties of England; Rutland is now either fourth and third, depending on whether the tide is in or out around the Isle of Wight (yes, really!) The 'horrible' name of Cumbria actually gave its name to Cumberland. Although the county only came into existence into 1974, the term Cumbria(n)had been used for to describe the area a long time before that-- Cumbrian Mountains is a notable example of this.

How can you tell whether a person you have just met comes from Yorkshire. Just wait 30 seconds and they will tell you how great Yorkshire is and how proud of being a yorkshireman they are. Then ask them where they live and they will often answer "Surrey"

A tip to anyone trying to do the Yorkshire dialect. The T’ sound does NOT replace the word “THE.” The just isn’t said in Yorkshire, it’s completely left out. T’ (Or Teh’ or Ta’ depending on the exact Yorkshire accent) replaces the word “To.” For example, “I’m going to the shops, do you want anything?” becomes in Yorkshire “A’m off T’ shops, want owt?” In contrast, “Will you let the dog out?” becomes “Let dog owt will thez?” Notice “To The shops” is “T’ shops” where as “The dog” is just “dog”

Lovely amount of cultural appropriation here lads, thanks for deepening the bigotry. Also when we say t'shops, the t = to, and "the" is pronounced via a glottal stop immediately before the leading syllable of shops (or whatever noun you are going to or talking about). Now stop taking the mick out of stuff you do not understand, its a display of ignorance & bigotry, and its one of the reasons we (not me) voted to leave the EU, cheers.

The funniest thing is digging deep and learning about all the petty rivalries in the counties and cities, North vs South, Liverpool vs Manchester, Yorkshire vs Lancashire, London vs Everywhere Else, though most of them are one sided, it's just one group whinging about their supposed "rival", while said rival doesn't even think about them

AS A CUMBRIAN PLEASE DO CUMBRIA - it’s brand new and was Westmorland and then used to be Westmorland and Eden ffs it’s so confusing, I’m born right in the middle of Yorkshire and Cumbria and Lancashire and it’s just really hard to identify with any of the counties tbh edit: also how every county has about three different nhs trusts and how that works ! aha - this country is small but complicated

    The Cornish Piskie

Cornwall seems to be similar to Yorkshire in the case that it does greatly matter if you're from Cornwall or rather 'Cornish'. In Cornwall's case is probably due to the Celtic part since it has its own language. Devon also matters, but that tends to just be because Cornwall and Devon have a rivalry.

    • Simon Foxwell

Australia doesn’t have this wonderful history. Other than a few very cool aboriginal names which do sound really interesting. We ha have towns and suburbs. Called Cronulla, Kirawee, Parramatta, Woolloomolloo which I can never spell correct. Some good ones are the plural towns like Wagga Wagga which means crows, many of which. Locally it’s known as just Wagga, just once. Otherwise we just copied GB. Many towns are named after patrols, kings & Lords….
