we're obviously a primitive, first-run of 'intelligent' life on this planet. We'll need to use the nukes in angry escalation to find out we're one country, earth, and that we're misting each other and making the environment , our own home , too toxic to live in, because of a 'household argument'. I would so love to see how our kind lives, if it's still there, in, say, 5000 years from now.

I realize this is an older video, but I must site an inaccuracy in one aspect of the video. A submariners day is NOT based on 24 cycle. It is a 18 hour cycle. 6 hours on watch, 12 hours for sleep, study, etc. Numerous documentaries have pointed out this fact as well as interviews with submariners themselves. Other than that, a pretty good video.

When I was making SSBN patrols, there was essentially no communication at all once we left port. For 21/2 months you were pretty much dead to your family. Oh, and we stood 6 hour watches and got 12 hours off, not 8 and 16. I retired 20 years ago and I still can't sleep for more than about 5 hours at a time.

I've been out since 1977 and as you said, I can't sleep much past 5 hours at a time as well and it has been 40+ years now. Oh well, what the hell, that's the way it goes! 😉 A fellow 'sub sailor' MM2 Madd Matt

Some things are wrong. The depth is wrong (which you acknowledged) because the real depth is classified, submarines have switched to the 8 hour days but that does not mean they get 16 hours of free time (used to run on 6 hour cycles). You have 8 hours of watch, 8 hours is off going which is for doing collateral duties, maintenance, quals, and maybe a chance to relax or workout if youre lucky, 8 hours to sleep which you will almost never get, usually get about 3-4 sometimes less. The food is mostly better because they are cooking for a smaller crew. Try being on an aircraft carrier where the crew is cooking for 1000's of people. You mentioned ballistic missile subs may swap crews in allied ports which is false. Ballistic missile subs can only pull into american ports (part of what sucks about being on an SSBN is not being able to see the world). I think that incorrect statement stems from you not mentioning Guided Missile Submarines which also have 2 crews and are the same exact sub as a Ballistic Missile Sub but dont have ballistic missiles, and they can swap crews in allied ports (Florida and Georgia swap in Diego Garcia all the time). Decent video, just some discrepancies that you wouldnt know unless you were a submariner.
